German craftsmanship: traditional manufactories of world class
Germany is not only a country of modern industry and technology, but also home to traditional manufacturers that are valued worldwide for their craftsmanship. Three outstanding examples are Nomos Glashütte, Meissen and Glashütte Lamberts.
The watch manufacturer Nomos Glashütte impresses with its meticulous handcraft. "At Nomos, the dignity of work is still celebrated," wrote the US writer Gary Shteyngart about the manufacturer. It can take several years to complete a watch, which underlines its exceptional quality.
The Meissen porcelain manufactory has been active since 1710 and is famous for its hand-crafted pieces. The precise work of the sword-makers who apply the iconic cobalt blue trademark and the variety of porcelain shapes make Meissen unique worldwide.
The Lamberts glassworks , a world market leader for hand-blown flat glass, produces glass for the Cologne Cathedral and Big Ben, among others. "It's reminiscent of a dance," says authorized officer Robert Christ, describing the coordinated work on the glowing glass. With over 5,000 different colors, Lamberts remains the leader in the industry.
